I think that 2012 will be a year that will stay with most of us for a very long time. You may have your own personal reasons to remember (or even forget) 2012 but for most of us involved in cycling, whether at a competitive or just social level there were obviously two massive events which dominated the whole year and impacted the way in which we as a club operate and may even influence the direction of the club over the coming years. I am ofcourse referring to the first British winner of the Tour de France by ‘Sir’ Bradley Wiggins and then followed a few days later by the gold rush and surge of public enthusiasm that was the London 2012 Olympics, more of which later. I will start by looking back to the early part of the year where it was a more active start than normal in racing where as well as there being some hardy roadies and testers out competing we also saw lots of Rascals (and a few parents) getting muddy in the Gorrick MTB events and local CycloCross leagues (with a few wins too). As always though the first club event of the year in March saw many club members dusting off their race bikes for the Club Hilly Time Trial where new member Dave Larkin came out victorious over Jon Lewis and Gavin Morton. It was also nice to see some newer members trying out the event for the first time in what turned out to be a relatively mild day (for a change). Jon took the defeat in his stride but more than made up for things in what was one of his biggest wins of the year a few weeks later as he headed to the continent for the Tour of Malta where he won the stage 4 individual time trial in the Master category on his way to a third place overall for the event.
Things really got going by the end of April/start of May when the Evening 10 time trials started up with a consistent number of starters (including lots of new members) and also a handful of regular helpers led by Derek Dowden. Also on Wednesday evenings the Eelmoor Criterium Series also began with a very large turnout of Rascals looking for their first experience of road racing across all youth age categories followed by the senior members of the club regularly taking part in the two events for the big boys (and girls). The regular support from the club members continued right across the summer where ‘end of series’ wins went to Sam Bishop (YD Boys) and Alice Matravers (YC Girls). In the Evening 10’s the penultimate event (of 16 races) saw the Club Handicap 10 title go to Frank Edge.

The agenda for Sunday's Annual General Meeting is now available to download from here. Please review and all come along to the Old Woking Cricket Club on Sunday.
Proceedings start at 1pm but we will be there a little before and there will be some lunch things on offer including nice hot soup and bread etc.
In addition, you will be excited to learn that the new club kit order has arrived from Italy with short and long sleeved jerseys, bibshorts and skinsuits plus a full range of Rascals kit. This will be the first time the kit is made available for sale so please bring your chequebooks (but you have to attend the AGM first). Further opportunities for buying kit will then be arranged by the Kit Secretary (once we have one!) |
